Everyone loves a quiz! Whether you’re a hard-core ultra-competitive quizzer, or just enjoy taking part for fun a quiz is a brilliant way to develop team work, test knowledge and have some fun at the same time.
So, as part of our My Science Club celebration of British Science Week (BSW) we have designed The Great STEM Quiz 2025 for you to use at school, home or science club to challenge and inspire your children in a fun way.
The quiz is made up of three rounds of twelve questions aimed at 8 – 12-year-olds. Questions have been tested for suitability and to ensure there is the right level of challenge and diversity. There are rounds on General STEM, Biomimicry and Change & Adapt, this year’s BSW theme.
Running the complete quiz, including marking each round, should take about 60 minutes, if that’s too long you can pick and choose which rounds to use and an individual round should take about 20 minutes to run.
Questions have been chosen to test a wide range of knowledge and, in many cases, can be the starting point for further discussions or a launch point for a topic or investigation. The majority of the questions are multiple choice, with a few short answer questions.
There are a number of different ways to run the quiz:
- In a classroom with children in pairs or small groups.
- Across a number of classes in a stage with children in small teams.
- Across different stages with children in mixed age group teams.
- Across a number of schools to crown the ultimate STEM champions.
In my local authority we are running the quiz online for 25 primary schools (70 classes) to take part in. Children will work in teams in their classes, share their score through an online form and I will announce the ultimate STEM Champions at the end of the quiz.
