Away from our work developing My Science Club resources and materials, both Bryony and Paul have been busy on other projects recently and both have been working on national priorities in their respective countries. We’re so proud that our shared expertise has been sought to develop draft curriculum content for both England and Scotland.
The Curriculum Improvement Cycle in Scotland started in November 2024 following a review of the current Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). Led by Education Scotland, the process has involved hundreds of teachers, school leaders, industry leaders, learned societies and other relevant stakeholders working in groups to craft a new curriculum.
Paul has been involved from the start of the process as part of a science CORE group of 30 expert practitioners. Over the past 20 months they have dissected CfE, explored differ curriculums from from the world and put together a future focused curriculum.
The new curriculum has just been released in draft form for consultation and then there is a planned redraft before final implementation in August 2028.
In England, following the publication of the Curriculum and Assessment Review (CAR report) in November 2025, the Department for Education (DfE) response and the engagement of the Association for Science Education (ASE) as lead drafters for primary, Bryony along with Dr Alex Sinclair from St Mary’s University Twickenham, have been working alongside Marianne Cutler, Director of Policy and Curriculum for ASE, to draft the primary programme of study for science.
The publication of the draft for public consultation is anticipated shortly, followed by a redraft and publication of the final version ahead of teaching in English schools by September 2028.
