Maths Matters

At My Science Club we love maths and Maths Week Scotland is always one of the first dates in our calendar. For the last three years we have developed an activity specifically for Maths Week Scotland, exploring an aspect of maths that we love.

I have always been fascinated by patterns in maths and the applications of those patterns in real life. One of the most fascinating patterns I have found to explore with a class is the phenomenon of Kaprekar’s Constant.

Dattatreya Kaprekar was an Indian recreational mathematician, he did it as a hobby, who was fascinated by number theory and published descriptions of several properties of natural numbers.

In 1949 he devised a simple process known as Kaprekar’s Operation which leads to four-digit numbers, when subtracted, always arriving at the same number – 6174. This number is known as Kaprekar’s Constant and it works for EVERY four-digit number where at least 2 digits are different, so it doesn’t work for 1111.

The operation is so simple and the result so satisfying that it is a must to explore at school, or at home, during Maths Week Scotland.
