At My Science Club we have been doing a lot of reflecting, thinking and learning about the climate and the impact that we all have on climate change. With our resources being used in 100s of schools globally we realised that we have an opportunity to influence, and inform, a lot of young people through our words and, more importantly, our actions.
We have created a set of climate conscious values which we try and use across our resources range (blog to follow) and have recently created a full set of 22 words and phrases commonly used when discussing climate change and sustainability.
We created them to scaffold and support learners of all ages in the primary phase to talk about these challenging and changing scientific concepts with growing understanding and more complex language.
Each word or statement has three definitions differentiated by age:
- early (age 4-7) primary
- middle (age 7-9) primary
- upper (age 9+) primary
Although the age boundaries are only a guide, they help to build a deeper and more complex understanding of the concept or key term.
The summery differentiated definition slide is followed by three matching posters which can be displayed on walls, corridors or screens to suit the needs of your learners.
